BI
Upgrade Series

Introduction

The recommended path for customers running an existing SAP BusinessObjects BI4.0 installation (any patch level) into SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.1 is via the Patch Upgrade.

However, when you install the BI4.1 SP1 Patch or higher on top of BI4.0, this will not automatically add all new features to the deployment. This article will guide you in how you can install new features that have been launched in the BI4.1 (SP1+) release when applying the Patch on top of BI4.0.

New BI4.1 Features (custom installation)

New Features available within the BI4.1 SP1 Installer are:

  • System Landscape Data Supplier (Platform Services)
  • Semantic Layer Java SDK (Developer Tools)
  • Semantic Layer Java SDK Samples (Developer Tools)
  • SAPBW 64 Bits Connector (Database Access)
  • XMLWebServices (Database Access)
  • OData (Database Access)

note: this feature list is a comparison between BI4.0 SP7 and BI4.1 SP1 and related to the features that are part of the installer.

within the BI4.1 product stack additional features have been added into the platform and clients. for a full overview of the features within BI4.1 (non install depending), please check the What's New Guide for BI4.1 available via: SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.1 – SAP Help Portal Page

Updated Features available within the BI4.1 SP1 Installer are:

  • DataDirect ODBC (Database Access) update from version 3 to version 4
  • Hadoop Hive (Database Access)
  • dBase (Database Access)

If we compare the features as release in BI4.0 SP7 to the feature list of BI4.1 SP1, we can see the following differences:

Options highlighted in yellow are NEW features, highlights in orange are updated

note: this updated feature list is the delta between BI4.0 SP7 AND BI4.0 SP1, comparing other BI4.0 versions may result in additional components

Deploying new features of the BI4.1 SP1+ after Patching

When you have been using SAP BusinessObjects BI4.x and want to upgrade to the latest release, SAP BusinessObjects BI4.1 SP1 or higher, it is recommended to leverage the Patch update that is available for existing deployments. However while deploying the BI4.1 SP1+ Patch, not all new features will be added to the installation. To deploy the added features in your existing landscape you can run an expand installation of the BI4x release.

The following steps will provide a step by step guide how you can expand the BI4.1 SP1+ patched system (assumption is that the BI4.1 Patch has already been applied). Steps for Patching the BI40 system to SAP BusinessObjects BI4.1 can be found in a next section of this document.

Note: If you have a clustered environment, you need to execute these steps on each system requiring the additional features

Windows

Steps for adding BI4.1 New Features after patching a BI4.0 system into BI4.1 SP1+ on a Windows System

  1. Navigate to "Programs and Features" within the Control Panel

    BO40SP Base Install Update 01.jpg
note: once the BI4.1 SP1 Patch has been applied the Installer will mention SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 4.1 SP01 Setup even if the BI4.0 Base installer has been selected. This is due to the fact that the BI4.1 SP01 Patch will update the install manifest used by all BI4x installers.

  3. In the Application Maintenance, select to Modify the deployment and continue with Next
  4. The Select Language Packages screen will appear.
Unless additional languages are required, continue with Next

  12. Once the installer is completed, you can close this with the finish button. The additional features selected in step 6 have now been deployed in the system.
If you have a deployment existing out of more then 1 machine, you need to repeat these steps for each server to ensure all systems have been deployed with the required features.

Linux / Unix

Steps for adding BI4.1 New Features after patching a BI4.0 system into BI4.1 SP1+ on a Linux or Unix system are described below.

For the used environment the installation of SAP BusinessObjects has been deployed in the folder "/usr/sap/bi4" and will be further referenced as "<BI4 Path>" within the steps. The steps for Linux and Unix are equal, the process described below is executed on a Linux system.

  1. Open a terminal session and login with the user that deployed the BI4 stack into the Linux / Unix Deployment
  2. In the terminal session navigate to <BI4 Path>
  3. Run ./modifyOrRemoreProducts.sh

Patching your BI4.0 system to BI4.1

As mentioned before, patching an existing BI4.0 deployment into BI4.1 will not add new features to the deployment, however some of them may be required or the reason why you are upgrading your BI4.0 platform into BI4.1. To patch your BI4.0 system into BI4.1 and add new features, the following steps can be taken.

Before applying the Patch for BI4.1 SP1, please validate if your system will be supported for the BI4.1 SP1 release, if the current BI4.0 system is deployed on Windows 2003 or 2003 R2 you will need to change the approach as this version of Windows is not supported by BI4.1 SP1. for further references to the supported platform, please consult the Supported Platforms for BI4.1 available via: SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.1 Supported Platforms (PAM)

The process of patching your existing BI4.0 system into BI4.1 SP1+ can be found in the Support Package Update Guide 4.1 SP <version> available on http://help.sap.com/bobip#section2
