Upgrading Sharepoint Integration with BI4.x

This document provides insight in the upgrade options and paths available for XIR2 and XI3.x deployments using the Sharepoint Integration Kit into the BI4.x platform. Via this article we hope to answer the question: Can I upgrade my existing XIR2 / XI3.x deployment that includes a Microsoft Sharepoint Integration Kit to the BI 4x Platform? And if so, what are the steps that I have to make to get this done.

Can I Upgrade my Sharepoint Integration?

Well there is a small challenge in this story.. The answer is two folded in "No" and "Yes, BUT". The first important starting point in regards to upgrading an existing integration into Sharepoint is the current version of Sharepoint. Within BI4.x, SAP supports Sharepoint 2007 and 2010 but only if deployed as 64 bits edition. This while XIR2 and Xi3.x only supports a Sharepoint 32 bits edition (see a list of support version of Microsoft Sharepoint by SAP BusinessObjects version further down in this article)

This provides you the direct answer to the question if you can just simply add the BI4.x Sharepoint Integration option next to the already in place XIR2/XI3x deployment with a negative answer. However there are ways to get things going without the direct need to replace your whole Sharepoint deployment. This again is depending on your currently deployed version of Sharepoint. If you currently use Sharepoint 2007 (as supported by XIR2 SP3+) there is a option to "upgrade" your Sharepoint 2007 32 bits deployment into a 64 bits deployment.

The next paragraphs will provide insight in the options to an upgrade path depending of the Sharepoint version.

Sharepoint 2007 (32 bits) in a FARM enable mode

if you are currently running an Microsoft Sharepoint 2007 environment in a farm or is farm enabled, there are options to migrate your existing environment from the 32 bits version into the 64 bits version without the need to restart you complete Sharepoint deployment. A good article in how to enable this migration can be found via Migrate an existing server farm to a 64-bit environment (Windows SharePoint Services 3.0) (link to Microsoft Technet)

Once you have your FARM up and running with a 32-bits and 64-bits deployment, you can start the installation of the SAP BusinessObjects Integration Option for SharePoint Software of BI4.x. PLease make sure you configure the roles of the hosting servers accordingly to ensure the BI4.x configuration will only be running on the x64 environment and the XIR2/XI3x version only on the x32 environment.

Please be aware that if you remove your 32-bits servers from the farm, you will not be able to host the XIR2/XI3.x Sharepoint integrations anymore!

Sharepoint Server 2003 (32 bits) or 2007 in a single instance mode

If your current an earlier version of Sharepoint then 2007 OR if you run Sharepoint in a single instance mode, there is no direct path for your upgrade and leveraging your existing Sharepoint platform.

Within BI4x there is no support for Microsoft Sharepoint 2003. Then only option available would be to upgrade your Sharepoint Deployment into a newer version that will be supported by SAP BusinessObjects BI4.x

If you run currently Sharepoint 2007 (32 bits) but in a single instance mode, an option to extend into a FARM is not available (at least not to my knowledge, but this you need to validate with your Microsoft Sharepoint experts). IN this case, "upgrading" the Sharepoint 2007 deployment to an 64 Bits platform is not available and require a new installation of Sharepoint to be leveraged by SAP BusinessObjects BI4.x
